Diet plays a pivotal role in preventing heart disease. Certain types of foods can negatively impact your cardiovascular system, increasing your risk of developing heart problems. To protect your heart, it's important to limit or avoid foods high in saturated and trans fats. Saturated fats, found primarily in red meat, processed meats, full-fat dairy products, and some tropical oils, can raise bad cholesterol (LDL) levels. Trans fats, often found in fried foods, commercially baked goods, and processed snacks, are particularly harmful as they raise LDL cholesterol and lower good cholesterol (HDL) levels. Excessive intake of sodium can lead to high blood pressure, a major risk factor for heart disease. Processed foods, canned goods, and restaurant meals are often high in sodium. Limiting sugary drinks and foods is also important, as they can contribute to weight gain, high blood sugar, and inflammation, all of which can harm your heart. Refined carbohydrates, found in white bread, pasta, and sugary cereals, can also lead to blood sugar spikes and increase the risk of heart disease. Instead, focus on a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins (like fish and poultry), and healthy fats (like those found in avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil). Making these dietary changes can significantly reduce your risk of developing heart disease and promote overall cardiovascular health.
